REACHING FOR THE DREAM "THROUGH EDUCATION"
Please join us at South Medford High School Auditorium on Sunday, January 17, from 2 to 4pm to celebrate the life and teachings of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Featured on the itinerary are:
Master of Ceremonies: Carson Bench, Chairman of KSKQ 94.9 FM Steering Committee and board member of the Multicultural Association of Southern Oregon.
Opening Invocation by Native American Elder Nick Hall on drum and Tom Smith on flute.
Rogue Valley Peace Choir: Through music, the 140-member choir shares its message of peace, equality, social justice, and responsible stewardship of our planet. Choir members endeavor to model good communication skills, showing respect and compassion for others regardless of race, age, gender, religion, sexual orientation, disabilities, musical level or political persuasion.
Ballet Folklórico Ritmo Alegre is a local dance troupe that performs traditional Mexican regional folk dancing at many festivals and events around the Rogue Valley. Members of the Youth Performance Company will perform dances celebrating the themes of social justice and equality.
Judge Lorenzo Mejia was born in Chihuahua, Chihuahua Mexico. His family migrated to Oregon after his father obtained work with the Southern Pacific railroad. Lorenzo grew up in and graduated from high school in North Bend. He obtained both his baccalaureate and Law degree from the University of Oregon. Lorenzo moved to the Rogue Valley in 1988 to work as a staff attorney at Southern Oregon Public Defender Inc. In late 2001 Lorenzo left the public defenders and took an eight-month sabbatical. In April 2002 Governor Kitzhaber appointed Lorenzo to the Circuit Court bench for Jackson County. Lorenzo’s interest in law began in the turbulent ‘60s. As he witnessed the civil rights struggle it soon became apparent how important laws, their promulgation and interpretation, are in the shaping of our society.
Kids Unlimited Project Life: Organized in 2009 by Kids Unlimited staff and AmeriCorps HOPE members, these 7th and 8th graders are encouraged to build dialogue with peers and gain the knowledge needed to make healthy life choices.
Living on Dreams Band with band leader Kent Heyward on Vocals Tenor and Soprano Saxophones, Larry Cavalier on Vocals and Keyboards, Richard Meyer on Vocals, Bass and Electric Violin. They are joined by Monterey Blues Festival artist: Bishop Mayfield on West African Drums. Their eclectic musical and vocal stylings range from Miles Davis and Cole Porter to Weather Report. Living On Dreams is about giving and affirming the footprints of happiness in hearts boldly living the beat of their dream.
The mission of the Medford MLK Task Force is to honor the vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his goal of race unity. The annual MLK celebration promotes the dignity and value of all human beings, regardless of their color or their beliefs. This tribute to Dr. King is designed to honor his life and legacy with inspirational performing arts and words. We are encouraged to make this holiday a day of remembrance, celebration, action, and service, not just a day off from work or school. In addition to joining the local celebration, you may also serve your community and support Dr. King’s vision by making a donation to offset the costs of this public, admission-free event. Contributions will go directly to pay for the high school venue, speaker costs, refreshments, and promotion. Checks may be made out to The Multicultural Association of Southern Oregon, and sent to: P.O. Box 67, Medford, OR 97501. Your assistance will be greatly appreciated! Martin Luther King Day in 2010 is on Monday, the 18th of January.
